If you just purchased a new home, you are probably excited to start moving in and getting settled.
However, before you unpack that first box, there are a few things you may want to take care of.
Below I share my list of the top 5 recommended "To-Do's" when moving into a new home.
#1: TEST SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
This should be one of the very first things you do to protect your home and your family! Have extra batteries on hand and consider updating these to smart devices for extra safety.
While you’re at it, purchase fire extinguishers for your home and know how to use them.
#2: CHANGE THE LOCKS
This is a standard safety measure to take but can’t be done until after closing. Swing by your local hardware store to pick up new locks before the big moving day so that you can get it taken care of right away!
#3 : GET TO KNOW YOUR HOUSE
Make sure you know where major things are located such as the circuit breaker box and the main water shut off valve. It’s better to be prepared rather than waiting until you need to know to figure it out.
#4: FORWARD YOUR MAIL
This one sounds like common sense but the US Postal Service will stop forwarding mail 6 months after you move so you want to be sure that you are receiving everything you need and get this one taken care of right away.
#5: DO A DEEP CLEAN & TACKLE LARGER PAINTING PROJECTS
The best time to do a deep clean is when the house is empty and free from large furniture. You could even hire a cleaning service to do one big clean before the moving day so you don’t have to worry about it.
Is there a room you want to paint right away? Consider picking out the colors and painting before you move your furniture in. It makes the process a lot easier.
